A Guide to Kief: The Cannabinoid Fairy Dust

Kief – Enchanting, Potent, Effective

In the wide, wonderful world of cannabis, there’s a hidden treasure known as kief. It’s the powdery substance that can take your cannabis experience to new heights. Just like fairy dust, kief is a potent concentrate, but made from the resinous trichomes of cannabis flower instead of pixie sweat. Kief is an extraordinary powder that holds within it all of the cannabinoids from the plant, so it has higher potency than traditional flower and a texture reminiscent of sandy beaches. In this guide, we’ll dive deep into the captivating realm of kief, exploring its origins, versatility, and the art of harnessing its potent powers. Get ready to embark on a journey of elevated delight as we uncover the secrets of kief and its myriad uses!

Section 1: What is Kief?

Kief is the ethereal essence of the cannabis flower, it’s literally where all of the active ingredients in the cannabis live. To fully understand, we first need to step into the microscopic world of cannabis and behold the mesmerizing wonder of trichomes. Trichomes are tiny, crystal-like structures that cover the surface of cannabis flowers, glistening like a magical frost. Under the lens of a microscope, trichomes appear as delicate hairs with bulbous heads, each holding the promise of potent cannabinoids. Trichomes begin to form as the cannabis flower develops during the growing cycle. During flowering, these trichomes undergo a remarkable transformation. As the plant matures, the trichomes evolve, producing a symphony of cannabinoids that give cannabis its unique properties, including THCA, precursor to THC forms within the trichomes, alongside CBDA, CBGA, and an array of other cannabinoids. The trichomes in any given plant contain whatever cannabinoids the plant genetics dictate. For example, plants with a high THC profile produce trichomes containing THCA. As strains high in CBD are growing, they produce trichomes high in CBDA. Growing conditions and when the plant is harvested have a big impact on the trichome development. After the plant is harvested, the trichomes are removed, forming kief. As a result, kief a treasure trove of resinous trichomes that contain a concentrated dose of cannabinoids. Picture a fine, powdery substance shimmering with the potential for extraordinary effects. This fairy dust contains whatever mix of cannabinoids was present in the plant it was harvested from, including THC, CBD, CBG, and all of the minor cannabinoids, making kief a full spectrum therapy. A solventless concentrate that will enchant your senses and elevate your experience, kief is brimming with cannabinoid and offers a magical experience that can transcends your consumption experience.
Prepare to be spellbound by the potency of kief. Compared to the cannabis flower itself, kief packs a more powerful punch due to its concentrated cannabinoid content. Just a pinch of this enchanting powder can take your experience to new heights, offering intense effects and a truly effective journey. Whether you seek relaxation, pain relief, or an uplifting boost, kief holds the key to unlocking the full spectrum of cannabis magic.

Section 2: The Art of Harvesting Kief

The process of harvesting kief is a delicate art, where the cannabis flower undergoes a transformation from its flower plus trichome form to the exquisite powder we know and love. This technique, often referred to as dry sifting, involves separating the resinous trichomes from the plant material through a meticulous process.

After the cannabis flowers are harvested and dried, they’re gently sifted over a fine mesh screen or sieve. This process lets the tiny trichomes laden with precious cannabinoids fall through the screen, separating from the plant material. The result? A pure and potent pile of kief that embodies the essence of the cannabis flower and contains all of its power.

What makes the art of harvesting kief really remarkable is that it’s a solventless process. There are no chemicals or solvents used, which ensures that the integrity of the cannabinoids and terpenes remains uncompromised. This natural approach preserves the full spectrum of flavors and aromas and doesn’t expose you to any chemical byproducts, so every sprinkle of kief is a clean experience.

The beauty of solventless kief lies in its versatility and purity. Whether you prefer to sprinkle it on your favorite dish, infuse it into oils or butter, incorporate it into your beauty routine, or roll it into a joint for an extra kick, you can trust that you’re indulging in a natural choice. The solventless process ensures that your kief is free from any unwanted additives, allowing you to savor the essence of cannabis in its purest form.

Section 3: How to Collect Kief

A large sift after a harvest isn’t the only way to get kief, you can also collect it! While you can’t get huge amount this way, you can absolutely get enough to make potent edibles and other products if you activate the kief in the Ardent FX or Mini decarboxylators. More on kief activation and uses in a minute. Back to capturing kief from your flower. If your flower is of high enough quality, and you see frosty trichomes on the flower or the shimmer of kief fairy dust in your weed jar, you can likely capture some of that kief as your grinder your flower to smoke it. One popular way is to use a grinder with a kief catcher. These multi layer grinders have a screen inside the grinding area that lets trichomes fall through and accumulate over time. There have been many instances where people had this kind of grinder, didnt know about it, and were surprised, delighted and sometimes confused when they unscrewed the second compartment in their grinder to find a store of powdery kief. It does take time to accumulate this way, but its a cool and passive way to collect your own kief. For small and large amounts of already done for you kief, check out Ardent’s high potency, non-psycoative CBGA kief.

Section 4: Activating Kief

Just like flower and other concentrates, kief needs to be activated (decarboxylated) in order to turn the acid form of the cannabinoid into the active and bioavailable form. In order to unlock THC from THCA and CBD from CBDA, CBG from CBGA and so on, and ensure that you are getting full activation of over 97% of those cannabinoids so you can use less and stretch your stash even further, use Ardent’s precision decaboxylation technology. The FX, Mini and all of the accessories make the process seamless. With Ardent’s proprietary, state-of-the-art technology, you can trust that every batch of decarbed kief will be perfectly activated, ensuring maximum potency and effectiveness. With Ardent you’re an instant wizard, no wand needed, just the simple press of a buttom. After decarb, the kief is really ready to shine.

Section 5: Creative Uses of Kief

One of the best things about kief is its versatility and that it is not just limited to a single method of consumption. That means you have the freedom to explore incorporating it into all of your cannabis rituals. From smoking it on its own for a potent experience to blending it with cannabis flower for a customized high, kief unlocks a world of possibilities. Its powdered form also lends itself beautifully to culinary adventures, infusing your favorite recipes with a touch of cannabis magic. Perfect for beauty and wellness applications, too, kief’s magic knows no bounds!

Pamper yourself with the natural goodness of cannabinoids and let your beauty shine with a hint of kief’s enchanting touch.

Enhancing Your Vape and Combustion Experience

One popular way to enjoy kief is through smoking. Kief can be smoked on its own to deliver a potent and concentrated dose of cannabinoids in a single puff. It’s also perfect as an accent to your usual consumption flow, like an added vitamin boost. Make cannabinoid blends that work best for your needs by sprinkling a pinch of this magical fairy dust into your bowl, joint, or blunt, and prepare for an elevated journey customized just for you.

Blending kief with your favorite cannabis flower adds an extra layer of potency and complexity. This method allows you to customize the cannabinoid profile of your smoke, tailoring it to your desired effects. Whether you’re seeking a euphoric high, soothing relaxation, or a harmonious balance, the combination of kief and flower unlocks a world of possibilities.

It’s important to remember that kief is potent, so start with a small amount and gradually increase your dosage as desired, especially when dealing with THCA and activated THC kief. e on its own or incorporate it into your favorite cannabis rituals, the possibilities are endless.

Section 5: Dosage and Dosing

Like any potent magic, kief demands respect and caution. Kief on average has between 30-50% cannabinoid content, depending on how finely it is sifted. That’s over 300-500mg per gram. Start with small doses to familiarize yourself with its potency, and gradually adjust to find your desired experience. Dosage depends on personal preferences and tolerance levels, so take your time and listen to your body’s cues. For further guidance on dosing, consult Ardent’s comprehensive dosing guide, designed to support your journey into the realm of kief.

Instant Edibles on the Go: Empanadas on the Boardwalk

Above all, cannabis is versatile. And being able to make infused oils at the press of a button using just a tiny amount of cannabis, kief or concentrates means that you aren’t stuck in the rut of cannabis chocolates and gummies. There’s nothing better than being able to add variety and excitement to your cannabis routine and seamlessly incorporate it into your routine and show your friends and family the endless possibilities of this amazing plant. That’s why we’re so obsessed with instant edibles and making infused sauces on the go.

One of our favorite places to unwind, connect with nature and expand our minds is at the beach. And the boardwalk means snacks, snacks, and snacks!

Precise Decarboxylation for Maximum Activation

As you may know by now, THC, CBD, CBG and other cannabinoids are locked under an acid layer inside the raw plant. Ardent;s precision technology unlocks over 97% of the cannabinoids in your flower, kief or concentrate, meaning you can get over 200mgs of THC from one nug of 20% THC flower. For many concentrates, that means over 700mg in a gram. For you, that means just using a tiny bit of starting material in order to instantly create any product you could dream of. And it’s not just THC, Ardent decarboxylators activate CBD, CBG, THCV and all of the other major and minor cannabinoids, giving you the power to make personalized, custom therapies for medical cannabis, wellness and enjoyment purposes. Activating and then using your flower, kief and concentrates in your meals means that you save money and you’re in control of the dose every time.

Infusing on the Go: Mixing Decarbed Herb, Kief, and Concentrates

One of the easiest ways to infuse on the go is taking some decarbed herb kief and concentrates and mixing it right into your dish. This is great for blending into salads, soups, pasta and breakfast dishes. If you’re looking for even infusion into a dipping sauce, its also super simple to take your decarbed material and infuse it into some oil. A second cycle in the Ardent with the decarbed material and oil will extract the cannabinoids from the flower into the oil. Put your infused oil into a small container and bring it on your adventures. Mix the infused oil into your sauces or dressings when you’re out for a meal in the town.

Beach Day Infusion Adventure with Ardent FX

For this day on the beach with the ardent ladies, we decaboxylated 1 gram of Purple Punch in the FX and then used the FX to infuse the 1 gram of decarboxylated flower into an 1 ounce of MCT oil. Based on the starting 24% THC in our flower, after activation and infusion we had 200MG THC in our ounce of MCT oil. Plenty for three ladies looking for a therapeutic and relaxing afternoon. We chose MCT oil because it has no taste and will easily mix in with any snack we encountered.

Elevating Empanadas with Infused Sauce

As soon as we arrived, we heard the siren song of the Empanada Man. We opted for chicken and veggie, and they came out piping hot sauce on the side. To take these empanadas to the next level, we mixed the infused MCT oil with the empanada sauce and dipped as much or little as we wanted. Eve went for a little dose, just a few dips. Miriam went all the way in, pouring the sauce onto hers. And you can just call me the Goldie Locks of the bunch. A little dip and a little pour got me JUST RIGHT.

Infused Mini Pancakes 3 Ways in the FX

It’s so easy to make anything with Ardent, especially incorporating your favorite cannabinoids in your favorite snacks. First off, Ardent’s decarb and infusion capabilities are divine. But even more than that, it’s its own portable oven. You can bake snacks and mini meals right inside. And the accessories make the creation process exciting and full of possibilities to fuel your entire day, from enhancing your morning routine to packing your midnight snacks with extra plant protection.

Making Pancakes in the FX

Making pancakes in the FX was easy as pie. First we put the FX on A1 to Preheat. Then we blended our pancake mix (you can use any variety) with a little sprinkle of decarbed ground herb, for a potent 20mg THC per pancake. Remember, of course, that you can use decarbed CBD, CBG or any mix of flowers, kiefs or concentrates and blend with your meals and snacks. You can also infuse into oil after decarb and then use the oils in your recipes instead of using the decarbed material directly. To learn more about dosing your creations, check out our dosing guide

Utilizing the Triple Lifter

After we mixed our bud and batter, we got non-stick with a little spray to each of the layers of the triple lifter. This little accessory is amazing for making three snacks at once in the FX, or for decarbing different strains or types of material. Triple lifter makes it simple and satisfying to decarb kief, concentrate and flower all at once.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Infused Mini Pancakes in the FX

Pour the pancakes and pop the lifter into the FX, and then run the Bake cycle for 20 minutes. Remove the lifter, pop out the infused pancakes and get to enjoying it!! You can get doubly elevated by using cannabutter on your infused cakes.

Exploring Alternative Methods with Nova Vessels

Just like the triple lifter, the double and single lifters are the wind beneath your creative wings. Effortlessly expand the capacity of your FX with the power of the double stack, and slide and glide jars, vials and all your other containers in and out of the machine with ease using the classic single lifter.

Exploring Creative Possibilities with the FX, Nova, and Mini

As an alternative to the triple lifter, we made some super fluffy pancakes using the Nova Vessels in the FX. Same process as making them on the triple lifter, we used the double lifter to hold the two small Vessels. We filled the bottom of the vessels with the batter and placed the Vessels on the and into the FX. The result was thick fluffy infused mini pancakes.

There are so many ways to create in the FX, Nova and Mini. At the press of a button you can make your favorite snacks, customized to your dose, fun and simple to make.

CBGA Everclear infusion

CBGA is a unique cannabinoid that has moved from the minor leagues to the main stage as growers have begun to breed this interesting cannabinoid in larger quantities among select special strains. If you missed our first breakdown about CBGA and it’s potential to support health in a variety of ways, you can find it in our article titled “What is CBGa?”

After you get a better idea of CBGA’s potential, you’re likely interested in how to use it! Similar to CBD and THC strains, CBG can be used in any number of ways, depending on preference. And there are benefits to both the naturally-occurring acidic form – CBGA – and the decarboxylated, activated CBG , which is created when the strain is decarboxlyated.

We wanted to show the process and effectiveness of activating and extracting CBG flower into Everclear. Everclear, a high-proof grain alcohol (60% alcohol by volume), can be used directly after a no-heat infusion as a tincture or topical, or can be evaporated off to make the end product more concentrated and potent.  If you’re looking for the highest quality CBGa for your activations and infusions, don’t miss our non-psychoactive, high-potency CBGa bundles.

Step 1:

We took the CBGA flower and decarboxylated it for one cycle in the NOVA. You can see the results below. The starting flower had the potential for over 12% CBG, and the decarboxylated flower had over 12% CBG = 120 mg CBG per gram of decarbed flower.

***The starting flower had 13.86% CBGa – to determine the total potential CBG after activation, multiply by 0.87. Here, 13.86% x 0.87 = 12.05% total potential CBG.

Step 2:

We tested two different room-temp Everclear infusion times.

1 Hour No-Heat Infusion

We placed 1 gram of decarbed CBG into 1 ounce of Everclear and left it on the counter for one hour. No heat was used, and the jar was not disturbed. After an hour, we shook the jar for 20 seconds and then strained the raffinate from the Everclear. You can see the testing results – E00211. After 1 hour in room-temp Everclear, 76 mg of CBG out of the 120 mg CBG in the flower was extracted into the Everclear solution. That’s over 62% extraction rate from the 1 hour room temp infusion.

3 Hour No-Heat Infusion

Next, we placed 1 gram of decarbed CBG into 1 ounce of Everclear and left it on the counter for three hours. No heat was used, and the jar was not disturbed. After three hours, we shook the jar for 20 seconds and then strained the raffinate from the Everclear. You can see the testing results – E00210. After 3 hours in room-temp Everclear, about 100 mg of CBG out of the 120 mg CBG in the flower was extracted into the Everclear solution. That’s over 80% extraction rate from the 3 hour room temp infusion.

Tips on getting more

There is evidence that colder is better; many suggest that placing it in the freezer will stiffen the trichomes and make them fall off easier, similar to ice water hash practice. We will be following up soon with more testing results related to frozen extraction.

Agitation

The reason heat works so well and that warm oil infusions infuse at rates of over 90% in less than an hour is because heat increases the kinetic energy of the solution, hastening the infusion. Although you should not use heat with alcohol, you can replicate the increased motion with a little physical intervention. Shaking the jar more often during the infusion period is a popular method, and we will be back with more testing results to show the science behind that.

CBG can also be infused into a wide range of oils by mixing the decarbed flower with the oil and placing the mixture back in the NOVA for an infusion cycle. Manually stop the cycle by holding down the power button or unplug the machine after your desired infusion time. Our testing shows that 45 min, 1 hour and 2 hour infusions all have almost identical infusion outcomes, so the choice is yours!

Heat is tempting but just don’t.

The dangers of heating alcohol, both the explosion hazard and the danger of inhaling alcohol fumes it presents, make it a very dangerous option. There are many other ways to get fast and effective extractions without putting yourself at risk.

And remember, what’s not in the infusion remains in the raffinate, so make good use of these less potent but still useful leftovers.

Decarbing Concentrates – Easy High Potency Instant Edibles

And We Flipped it Into Rosin Hummus!

You might be familiar with decarbing hemp and cannabis flower, but did you know that you can decarb concentrated forms of cannabis like kief, rosin, BHO and budder? Our favorites are solventless concentrates; those are ones created without using chemicals like kief and rosin. (If you haven’t tried our high potency, non intoxicating CBGa kief, don’t miss out on this magical “mother of cannabinoids) One benefit of concentrates is that you can get a much higher dose of whatever cannabinoid you’re looking to use when it’s in concentrate form.

Making Super Potent THC Hummus with Activated Rosin

Today we had a lot of fun making super-potent THC hummus using activated rosin. The process was so easy and we got the most out of the material using Ardent technology, in this case the Ardent FX decarboxylator. Just like with flower, any cannabinoids that are in the concentrate are still in the acidic form. For THC, the acid form is THCa, for CBD the acid form is CBDa, for CBG its CBGa, and so on. Decarboxylation is the process of removing that acid molecule to reveal the underlying active THC, CBD, CBG, etc. This is done through precise heat and timing, and unlike the oven, toaster oven and other kitchen appliances that aren’t designed for decarboxylation and will burn off or fail to activate some of the cannabinoids, leading to 30-50% loss, Ardent gets you over 97% activation each time at the press of a button. Ardent’s dual sensors and thermal heating core create lab-grade heating cycles that fully activate any material without the loss.

Activating Rosin with Ardent FX, Mini, or Nova

For this activation, we used Mammoth Scooby Snacks Rosin, which was 65% THCA. After activation in Ardent FX, Mini or Nova, the rosin will have over 620mg of THC per gram! Learn more about dosing in our dosing guide referenced above. We used the double lifter to help us easily get the rosin in and out of the FX. And since the rosin came in a glass container, we kept it in its same glass container when we decarbed it. When you’re using the FX, to decarb THCA to THC, use the A1 cycle. The precision decarb process takes about an hour and a half including the warm-up and cool-down portions of the cycle. As soon as the light turned green, we removed the double lifter with the decarbed rosin.

Infusing the Decarbed Concentrate with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

At this point we could have poured the decarbed rosin directly into our snack, but we didn’t want a 600+mg THC snack! So in order to stretch the concentrate and make it easy to mix into the savory snack we want to make, we mixed the decarbed concentrate with some extra virgin olive oil. We popped the EVOO and decarbed the concentrate mixture back into the FX on the Infuse setting to mix them together. The great thing about concentrates is that, since you’re just blending them together instead of extracting from the flower and then straining, you don’t have to run a full infusion cycle. You just need to get the concentrate and oil mixture warm enough that the oil and concentrate are all well mixed and blended together.

Once we infused the decarbed concentrate and EVOO, we mixed some in without hummus for a deliciously potent, healthy treat. Easy as pie, but even better for you!

Use Ardent technology and accessories to create top shelf products for less and custom dosed for yourself and your friends and family using your favorite flower, kief, rosin and open a new world of fantastic possibilities to improve your health and elevate your existence! Get your hands on the FX and accessories featured in this video, including the Double Lifter and Nova Vessel.

How to Make Cannabis-Infused Butter AKA Cannabutter for Edibles

What is cannabutter? Cannabutter is one of the most popular bases for cannabis edibles. It can replace regular butter in boxed brownie, cake, and cornbread mixes, or can be used to thin out and infuse chocolate, as a spread on toast with jam, or consumed in other from-scratch recipes of all kinds.

Ancient Indians frequently cooked with cannabis and knew that the plant material needed to be cooked with ghee, or clarified butter, to obtain the full bioavailable medicinal benefit. Ancient Indians, however, didn’t have Ardent technology, so the decarboxylation process wasn’t nearly as precise as it is today, and likely left behind many cannabinoids in the process.

This article will teach you how to make cannabutter, step-by-step, using the starting material of your choice.

How to Make Cannabutter

Equipment Needed

  • Decarboxylation method. If you want to get the maximum amount of cannabinoids out of your flower, kief or concentrate, use Ardent’s FX, Mini or Nova decarboxylators. You’ll get over 97% activation without loss. If you use an old school method like the oven, toaster oven, or crock pot, you’ll lose 30-40% of the active material during the decaboxylation process.
  • Ardent Infusion Press, Frainer, cheesecloth, or other strainer.
  • Infusion Sleeve or tempered glass jar (if decarbing wax/concentrates) plus the Lifter of your choosing to make placing materials into and out of the FX or Nova device a breeze.
  • Airtight container for storage like the Ardent Vessel or Ardent Infusion Mold
  • Silicone spatula

Making cannabutter involves two steps: decarboxylation (activation) of the starting material, whether that is flower, kief or concentrate, and then infusion of the decarbed material into the butter. If you’re decarbing and/or infusing using the oven, toaster oven, or the stovetop, in addition to the cannabinoid loss that happens during the decarb process, you also must keep a watchful eye on your material the entire time to prevent additional burning or degradation. With Ardent precision technology, not only are you getting full activation of your material without the loss, meaning that you can use less to get potent infusions and end products, there’s no need to do anything during the process other than press the button to change cycles between decarb and infusion. Simple, fool-proof and fun,

If you’re just learning how to make edibles, this recipe is a great starting point!

Cannabutter Ingredient List

  • 1 gram cannabis flower*, (or 1/4 gram cannabis concentrate, a bit of kief, or handfuls of stems and sugar leaf)
  • 1 stick, or 8 tablespoons, of butter or ghee*

*The amount of plant material and butter can be scaled up or down based on personal preference.

Check the label on your cannabis or hemp material for the percentage of THCA, CBDA, or other cannabinods it contains. You can calculate how many milligrams of THCA or CBDA is in each gram of flower, kief or concentrate by adding a zero to the percentage on the label. For example, if the flower 23% THCA, thats 230 mg THCA per gram. After precision decarb in the Ardent Nova or FX where the carboxyl group is removed but no cannabinoids are destroyed, the material will contain roughly 200 mgs of activated THC. However, if you’re using an oven, toaster oven or crockpot, you’ll be losing about 30-40% of the final THC or CBD in your material by either failing to fully activate, or burning off the remaining cannabinoids. So with the same flower instead of the full 200 grams, you can expect to have only 120-180mgs in each gram of flower after the decarboxylation step.

Decarboxylation is a precise function of heat and time: because ovens and crockpots weren’t created for decarboxylation and environmental factors like temperature fluctuation heavily impact the activation process, the results are usually lackluster. Ardent uses patented technology, including twin sensors, a thermal heating core that fully surrounds the material, and an algorithm that together create precision heating cycles that activate 97-100% of the THC, CBD, CBG and other cannabinoids present in the plant.

Tips to Getting Started

Decide on Dosage

Dispensaries usually divide edible portions into 10 mg pieces, however, many brands are also making microdosed foods so you can eat/snack on a full portion with just a bit of elevation, or enjoy individually portioned mood enhancers, such as mints or gummies for on-the-go dosing without losing your function. Others need extremely high doses to match their high tolerance, or for relief from various ailments. It all comes down to preference. There are two parts to deciding on dose. First is understanding how many mgs are in your starting material after decarb, so you know how much you’re consuming. The second part is knowing your ideal personal dose, so you can take that much and not more.

When planning your dose, keep in mind how many pieces or portions your recipe will yield. If you’re making 24 cookies and are using cannabutter infused with 200 mgs of THC, each cookie will come out to roughly 8 mgs.

During decarboxylation, you’re removing the acid molecule from the THCA to convert it into THC (or in the case of CBD, decarboxylation turns CBDA to CBD – also by removing the acid molecule.) Calculate the amount of THC or CBD in your butter by multiplying the amount of THCA or CBDA by .87%. Just move the decimal over one place to the right. For example, with starting material at 23% THCA, your butter will yield 200 mgs of THC. Factor in 30-40% loss if you’re using another method of decarboxylation such as the oven, crockpot, or toaster oven.

If you have strongly dosed cannabutter on hand, feel free to use just a portion of the cannabutter, replacing the rest of what the recipe calls for in unmedicated butter. In the same vein, if you want to make your infusion stronger, check out our blog on Infusion Boosting.

Remember to Decarboxylate or “Activate” your Cannabis

This is a critical step for making edibles, topicals, and other cannabis remedies that should never be skipped! Although there are many ways to decarb, including using the oven, a crockpot, the sous vide method, etc., the most foolproof, efficient, and cost-effective way to decarb (and get WAY more out of your material because there is no loss) is by using Ardent technology. We have cannabutter recipe instructions below, which will teach you how to make cannabutter in three ways: using the Ardent Nova, the Ardent FX, or the oven/stovetop method.

Easy Cannabutter Recipe

  1. Decarboxylate your cannabis. If you’re using the Ardent Nova, place your plant material inside the unit and begin the cycle by pressing the activation button. If you’re using the Ardent FX or Mini use the A1 setting to activate THC-rich material, and the A2 setting to activate CBD-rich material. If decarbing in the oven, place the bud on a foil-lined baking sheet on 230 degrees fahrenheit for 25-30 minutes (although time and temperature varies greatly, along with results, as traditional kitchen appliances are not desigend for a precision decarb process.)
  2. Infuse your cannabis. If using the Ardent Nova, place butter or ghee inside the unit over the decarbed material and run it for an additional cycle. If using the Ardent FX or Mini, insert butter or ghee into the unit over the decarbed material and allow it to run on the Infuse setting. If using the stovetop, place 1 ½ cups of water, 8 tablespoons of butter, and decarbed bud wrapped in a cheesecloth (fastened with a rubber band,) in a saucepan on medium heat, stirring frequently for 2-4 hours.
  3. Strain plant material out of the butter or ghee, using a strainer, cheesecloth, Ardent Frainer, or if you have the FX, using the Infusion Press
  4. Pour your mixture into an airtight container, the Ardent Vessel, or the Ardent Infusion Mold, and refrigerate or freeze until use. If you made your cannabutter on the stovetop, discard separated water from the infused butter and keep it in the refrigerator or freezer for storage.

Weed Butter Uses

If you’re wondering how to make edibles with your cannabutter, simply replace the butter your recipe calls for with cannabutter, or a portion of infused butter alongside additional unmedicated butter. Here are some ideas to get you started:

How to Store Cannabis Butter Once Made

Keep your cannabutter in an airtight container to prevent spoilage.  In the refrigerator, your properly stored cannabutter should last a few weeks, in the freezer, up to around 6 months.

How to Make Cannabutter Stronger

If your marijuana butter infusion isn’t as strong as you like, you can always run another infusion cycle to boost your infusion strength in the FX, Nova, or Mini with more decarbed bud to infuse it further.

If you’re a more experienced consumer, you should consider using cannabis concentrates to make your final product stronger. You can infuse hundreds of milligrams at a time into butter with each gram of decarbed material. Concentrate usually lies somewhere between 80-90% THC post-decarb, yielding a whopping 800-900 mgs of THC once activated. You can also add a bit of decarbed concentrate to a previously infused cannabutter mixture to “infusion boost” it further.

If you’re a first-timer or edible newbie, don’t forget the magic phrase, “start low and go slow.” You can cut your cannabutter with non-infused butter to reduce the amount of milligrams present in your edibles. Remember: you can always take more edibles, but it’s a bit harder to do the reverse, and edibles can take up to 3 hours to fully hit!

Common Pot Infused Butter Questions

Can you make cannabutter without decarbing?

Yes, but don’t. Seriously, don’t. Without activating your material, you’ll only activate a few cannabinoids here and there during the cooking and baking process, if that. It’s a colossal waste of money, and should not be done unless you’re interested in the health properties of THCA or CBDA, which are also found in less expensive plant parts like cannabis fan leaves. Fan leaves are a much more economical consumption option if you’re looking for THCA, otherwise, please decarboxylate your material to make pot butter!

How Can I Make Cannabutter with Wax?

Easily! Decarboxylate your cannabis in the FX, Mini or Nova using the Concentrate and Infusion Sleeve for mess-free cleanup. Infuse your butter or ghee into the decarbed material by running another cycle in the Nova, or pressing the Infusion setting on the FX or Mini. No need to strain – just refrigerate, then enjoy your THC butter. You just learned how to make cannabutter with wax!

Since wax is much stronger than flower, consider starting with ¼ of a gram, and working your way up with experience.

Why is my Cannabutter weak and how can I fix it?

If you’re wondering how to make cannabutter stronger, you must first ask yourself if you decarbed using a method of precision activation. If not, that’s your first mistake! Check out Ardent’s kitchen cannatechnology for help with decarb at home. If you used an Ardent device to decarb, but are still unhappy with the yield, you might want to consider using stronger material like a concentrate, or “wax.” You can also add more cannabinoids to a previously infused batch of butter (or oil, even) with a process called infusion boosting.

Does cannabutter lose potency?

When properly stored in the fridge or freezer, cannabutter does not lose potency. If you’re baking or cooking with the infusion, try not to let the edibles reach an internal temp of over 212 degrees F, or else the butter can lose a bit of potency, but your food burning is usually a tip-off there.

Does Microwaving Cannabutter Ruin it?

Nope! However, if you’re trying to make cannabutter inside the microwave, that’s not the best option. The microwave will not give your bud precision decarb, and will likely create a ton of wasted cannabis material. If you’re warming up your cannabutter for a weed butter recipe, no worries, your cannabutter should remain potent and bioavailable.

If you tried out our classic infused cannabutter recipe, you might want to look into our from-scratch cannabutter recipes: they’re delicious, versatile, and skip the day-of infusion step.

Love DIY But Looking for Something Fast and Easy?

We got you!! Ardent’s Done-For-You THC & CBD Cannabutter comes with 600mg THC + 600 mg CBD already infused. With 48 servings at 12.5mg of THC + 12.5 mg of CBD per teaspoon, you can instantly turn any meal into an elevated delight.

11 Easy Instant Edibles

An instant edible is a medicated treat that skips the infusion step entirely. That’s right, instant edibles use decarbed material as an additional ingredient inside cooking and baking, or sprinkled on top of foods just like any other spice.

The beauty of instant edibles is that there’s little to no prep work involved! You can order takeout, for example, and turn a dish someone else prepared into an easy-to-eat edible. The other great thing is that you can eat your meals without adjusting your lifestyle for additional calories, or compromising your health when you have allergies or dietary restrictions outside of your dispensaries’ store-bought offerings.

Just activate your flower, kief or concentrate in your Ardent FX, Mini or Nova, and keep a small bag of decarbed bud with you for when the opportunity arises, and get your medicine whenever you need it most. Here are some fun ideas to get you started:

Bagel with Infused Cream Cheese

Since fats make cannabis more bioavailable, a simple infused bagel with schmear makes for a fast and easy instant edible that can be made at home, or assembled with the help of any corner store, Dunkin, Starbucks, and Tim Hortons. The image below includes a massive 500mg THC dose of a little over 2 grams of 26% THC flower. For your average dose of 10-20mg, it would just take just the tiniest sprinkle of decarbed flower. To learn more about dosing with instant edibles, check out our dosing guide.

Banana with Infused Nut Butter

Looking for a quick boost of protein after the gym or at the start of a busy day? Consider tossing a banana in your bag, along with a packet or small container of peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower butter, etc. and some decarbed herb. The natural fats in the nut or seed butter will make the activated cannabis more bioavailable and it also does a great job of masking the taste.

Infused Lo Mein

We’re not asking you to attempt lo mein from scratch, though if you are craving noodles, we welcome you to try Monica Lo’s delicious Infused Longevity Noodles. If you’re like us, though, you definitely have a soft spot for takeout. So, kickback and watch your favorite show, support a small, local business, and sprinkle your lo mein with some activated cannabis.

Infused Keto Coleslaw

A mix of savoy cabbage, red cabbage, carrots, mayo, sour cream, vinegar, spices, and ground decarbed herb, our keto coleslaw recipe is a great side for burgers, hot dogs, and other all-American meals.

PB&J

Peanut butter and jelly is a clutch, high-protein lunch when you’re someplace without a refrigerator. Pack a medicated PB&J for a family day at 6 Flags, or in your lunchbox for a discreet lunch in the office. 200 mg THC dose pictured in the image below.

Instantly Infused Cupcakes

Instant edibles are not always eating weed directly, though that’s possible too, they’re also considered instant when they’re cooked or baked directly into a recipe that skips the infusion step entirely. Use a boxed mix for cornbread, cake, muffins, and more.

Cannabis-Infused Oatmeal

You can make infused oatmeal right inside your Ardent FX device! Whether you use healthier rolled oats, or sweet, nostalgic, and indulgent dino eggs, it doesn’t take much other than the press of a button to get this instant edible going. When it comes out, sprinkle some ground, decarbed herb on top, with mix-ins like strawberry preserves, powdered sugar, whipped cream, maple syrup, and more.

Infused Guacamole

Guac is already filled with plenty of spices and cilantro, so a sprinkle of activated cannabis or hemp couldn’t hurt! Mash up your avocados, add peppers, tomatoes, red onion, adobo, salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and ground, decarbed bud.

Rosin S’mores

We love making this summertime treat all year round, even indoors, using either a torch to lightly char our marshmallows, or the Ardent FX and Double Lifter to melt together two perfect s’mores at the same time. Make these sticky treats easily and instantly by swiping some decarboxylated concentrate on your graham crackers for a potent, efficient dose. Check out our s’mores tutorial for step-by-step instructions.

Vegan Cannabis Ceviche

A combination of hearts of palm, tomatoes, red onion, mango, avocado, and old bay, vegan ceviche is a light, refreshing salad that is easily transformed into an instant edible with a sprinkle of cannabis or hemp on top.

Kimchi Pot Pancakes

Kimchi pancakes are made by whisking together flour, water, kimchi, brine, scallions, jalapeno, sugar, and decarbed herb. A few minutes on the stovetop, flip, then enjoy this instantly infused probiotic meal.

The Ardent FX’s Adventure: How Extra Carrying Cases Saved the Day and Inspired a New Product

Once upon a time, the Ardent FX decided to embark on an adventure to Spain. It was excited to explore new lands and share its capabilities with the people there. But when it arrived at the airport, it realized it made a grave mistake. It had packed too many accessories and not enough luggage to carry them all! The FX was worried that it would have to leave behind some of its precious equipment and that it wouldn’t be able to perform at its best during the trip.

Then it remembered the extra carrying cases that it had brought along just in case! The FX quickly whipped out the cases and began to pack them with all its gear. The carrying cases were super spacious and could hold everything the FX needed. The FX breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that it could now travel comfortably and efficiently. It was ready to do the damn thang, Spanish style, of course!

During the rest of the trip, the FX realized just how essential these carrying cases were. They weren’t only great for transporting its gear but also for keeping everything organized and protected. The FX kept thinking about how much easier its life would have been if it had a separate carrying case product to rely on for all its travels and adventures.

Once the FX returned home, it knew it had to share its experience with the Ardent team. It told them about the struggles it faced during the trip and how the extra carrying cases saved the day. The team was amazed by the story and decided to turn the idea into a new product – the FX carrying case.

Now, the FX carrying case is available to all Ardent customers who want to travel with ease and keep their gear organized and safe. Thanks to the FX’s adventure in Spain, everyone can enjoy the benefits of the versatile and reliable carrying case. Grab yours today!

Ardent FX In-Unit Chili

Making an infused meal inside the Ardent FX, as a stoner, is one of life’s simplest pleasures. First, you know that your food is infused to its highest potential, with little to no loss, and that always feels great.

Then, whether you’re stuck at your desk, traveling through a hotel or bed and breakfast, or even camping or RVing, you can still eat a hot, hearty meal made from scratch, despite not having a full kitchen to work with.

This Ardent FX-made chili is filling, warming, and packed with plenty of protein to keep you going in any situation. Serve it over white rice and top with cheese, avocado, sour cream, and cilantro to round out the meal even more. Here’s how:

How to Get Started

The base of the infusion in this recipe is extra virgin olive oil. We adore the taste of our Traditional and Tuscan Herb olive oil, available for purchase on our website, because it boasts a super high antioxidant content, giving it an awesome flavor and high smoke point.

To make infused EVOO, start with precision decarb in the Ardent FX. Just place your cannabis or hemp inside the device, using the Concentrate and Infusion Sleeve or unlidded Vessel to prevent any mess, and place the setting on A1 to activate THC or CBG, or A2 to activate CBD.

Once the decarb cycle is complete, pour the EVOO over the activated plant material, fully submerging it. Run an Infuse cycle. Strain out the spent plant material using the Ardent Frainer, Infusion Press, or a cheesecloth, then store your infusion in an airtight container such as the Ardent Vessel or Infusion Mold.

Equipment Needed

  • Ardent FX device
  • Bowl
  • Food processor, for prep

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon cannabis-infused EVOO
  • ½ cup black beans, drained and rinsed
  • ¼ cup pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • ⅙ cup red onion, minced in food processor
  • ⅙ cup red bell pepper, minced in food processor
  • ⅙ cup celery, minced in food processor
  • ⅓ cup rotel, with liquid
  • ¼ cup vegetable stock
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • Cumin, to taste
  • Oregano, to taste
  • Sour cream, to taste
  • Shredded cheddar cheese, to taste
  • Cilantro, to taste
  • Prepared white rice

How to Make Cannabis-Infused Chili Inside the Ardent FX

  1. Add onions, garlic, red bell pepper, and celery to the FX along with the infused olive oil and allow it to cook for 20 minutes on the Bake setting.
  2. Add rotel, black beans, pinto beans, vegetable stock, cumin, and oregano. Allow it to cook for the remainder of the Bake setting.
  3. Remove the FX from the power base, and pour the completed chili into a bowl over white rice.
  4. Top with sour cream, cilantro, and shredded cheese to taste. Enjoy!

5 Cannabis-Infused Breakfast Toast Recipes You’ve Got to Try

Making the same breakfast every day gets so tedious, but thinking of something new to make each day is a task few find possible.

With a loaf of bread and a few fresh ingredients, you can make a new cannabis-infused toast every weekday.

World’s Best Avocado Toast

In our opinion, avocado toast is a great way to use up whatever’s in your fridge. Our favorite way to prepare this breakfast toast is with tomato, pickled onion, scallions, hot honey, balsamic vinegar, and a drizzle of Tuscan Herb EVOO infused with cannabis using the Ardent FX, Mini or Nova. Here’s how to infuse your extra virgin olive oil with bud. Check out the recipe and video for our favorite avocado toast here.

Peanut Better Toast

Peanut butter toast is packed with protein but always seems to be missing a little something. Oh yeah, flavor! Whisk a small amount of miso into some peanut butter before spreading it on your toast. Stack a few thinly sliced pieces of apple or fresh fig on the peanut butter layer, and drizzle it with cannabis-infused honey. Learn how to infuse your honey with cannabis with the Ardent Nova or Ardent FX by checking out our blog.

New York Toast

Nothing beats a New York bagel. Let’s replicate a less bready version on this “New York” toast. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on your sourdough slice. Then, we’re using the Instant Edible method for this recipe! Add everything but the bagel seasoning on top of the cream cheese, along with a sprinkle of ground, decarboxylated cannabis. Then add a layer of steamed spinach, a few slices of smoked salmon, and a couple slices of pickled red onion.

This is My Jam

Start with a thin layer of cannabutter on your toast. Then add a thin layer of mascarpone over that. Lastly, add a layer of your favorite jam (lately we’re loving homemade blueberry jam,) and add a poached egg on top of that… just for good measure. Sprinkle it with cannasalt and a little pepper. The combination of salty and sweet hits like nothing else.

Funghi Friday

This is another toast recipe that uses the Instant Edible method. Just spread a thin layer of Boursin soft cheese on your toasted bread. Then in a pan, sauté thinly sliced mushrooms (we like oysters or crimini for this) in a decent amount of cannabutter. Season with thyme, rosemary, black pepper, adobo, basil, and crushed red pepper for some heat. Add the cannabuttered mushrooms to your toast, drizzle with EVOO and freshly grated parmesan cheese.

Cannabis and the Freezer: Freezing Edibles and Infusions

A whole lot of inaccurate information is floating around the internet concerning freezing edibles and cannabis infusions.  Likewise, we thought we would do some myth-busting and set the record straight in this post.

We frequently get asked variations of these questions

  • Can you freeze cannabutter?
  • Can you freeze cannaoil?
  • What about freezing edibles?

The short answer to these questions is yes.

You can freeze all of these things in order to extend shelf life.  But how you do it can definitely affect the quality of the products when thawed.

Does freezing edibles effect potency?

A lot of so-called “internet experts” have misguided notions about freezing cannabis and potency.

We have seen reports claiming that freezing kills THC, along with other contradictory claims that freezing increases potency.  Neither of these statements is true.

Generally speaking, freezing temperatures slow chemical degradation and cannabis is no different from any other plant in this regard.  When it comes to infusions and edibles, freezing and refrigeration won’t harm the cannabinoids, but keeping them cold can help you avoid your precious treats and therapies spoiling or becoming moldy.

As for the notion that we have seen circulating around on internet message boards that freezing cannabis increases its potency, if only it were true.  It’s not.  If it was you would see every cannabis company selling frozen cannabis.

How to freeze cannabis infusions

Keeping various infusions in your freezer simplifies making edibles as you don’t have to take time to make an infusion first, because you have already done this important step in advance.  All you need to do is have fun in the kitchen creating delicious cannabis infused dishes!

You can freeze infused cannabutter or cannaoil for longer storage and it makes sense to do so.  Sometimes when left at room temperature mold growth can happen, especially if any water is in the mix.  Refrigerating and freezing helps prevent this.

Fats go rancid and the warmer the temperature, the faster this happens.  While fats can still go rancid in the freezer, it happens at a far slower rate.  You are good freezing infused fats for 3-6 months or more, depending on the type of oil.

Coconut oil, which has one of the longest shelf lives even at room temperature, can last for a year or more in the freezer.

When freezing cannabutter or cannaoil, it’s handy to use molds like Ardent’s silicone Infusion Molds before freezing.  Using the molds gives you specific portions you can pull out of the freezer whenever you are ready to cook with cannabis.

Freeze infusions in the molds until solid.  Remove from the mold, wrap in foil or plastic wrap, place in a freezer storage bag, label and date, and return to the freezer. Double wrapping the infusions this way gives them extra protection against freezer burn, more on this below.

How to freeze edibles

Let’s face it you probably don’t want to, nor should you, eat an entire batch of edibles at once.  Freezing allows you more flexibility with portion control and the luxury of saving your medicated foods for when you really need and/or want them.

To be sure, some foods freeze better than others.  But MANY different foods can be successfully frozen without compromising their quality and texture when re-thawed.   Generally speaking, the heartier the food, the better it will freeze.

These are all broad categories of edibles that can be successfully portioned out and stored in the freezer until you are ready to consume them:

  • Most baked goods: breads, brownies, cakes (frosted or unfrosted), cookies (baked or unbaked), muffins, many pies (especially fruit pies, baked or unbaked), scones.
  • Most soups or stews
  • Most casseroles
  • Hearty sauces such as marinara or Italian meat sauce or cooked salsas

How to Prevent Freezer Burn

Freezer burn happens when ice crystals form in the food during the freezing process or during its time in the freezer.  While not harmful freezer burn negatively affects the flavors and textures of food.  It might look like a dry white patch on the food or it might look like large ice crystals.  Here’s how to prevent it:

  • Allow food to cool completely in the refrigerator BEFORE wrapping and storing in the freezer.  Putting hot or even warm foods in the freezer creates too drastic a temperature change and likewise the formation of large ice crystals.
  • Keep the freezer temperature consistent.  Dips and raises in freezer temps are another common cause of freezer burn.
  • Wrap food well for the freezer.  Double wrapping, like we suggested in the infusions section of this post, is also a good idea when it comes to edibles.  Plus, if you wrap each portion individually, it makes it easy to thaw and only consume the number of edibles you need at any one time.

Freeze and Bake Toffee Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe

Buttery toffee adds an extra dimension to an already great cannabis chocolate chip cookie recipe.  It’s amazing that the addition of such an ingredient can improve even a classic recipe like Chocolate Chip cookies.

For hot medicated cookies anytime, freeze individual unbaked cookies on a waxed or parchment paper-lined baking sheet.  Once frozen, transfer cookies to a plastic freezer container or bag.  Whenever you want a medicated treat, remove however many cookies you want at a time and bake according to recipe instructions.

Each cookie in this recipe will have about 10 mg THC per cookie IF you made your marijuana butter from average cannabis (10% THC) and used 1/2 ounce (14 grams) of cannabis to make 1 cup of cannabutter.  Be sure to adjust the THC percentage or amount of infused butter for your needs.  If you need a lower dose, make up the difference with uninfused butter.

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cannabis-infused butter made in the Ardent FX, Mini or Nova
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar preferable dark
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar granulated
  • 1 large egg large
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup toffee chips
  • 1/2 cup walnuts or pecans chopped, optional

Line a large baking sheet with waxed or parchment paper.

In a small bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.  Set aside.

With an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment cream together the canna-butter and brown and granulated sugars until well incorporated.  Add the egg, and vanilla, and mix until just combined.  Slowly mix in the dry ingredients and stir just until combined.  Stir in the chocolate and toffee chips, and nuts, if using.

Scoop out about 2 tablespoons dough and press gently to form a flattened cookie.  Repeat with remaining dough, placing cookies on the prepared baking sheet. Place in freezer and freeze until cookies are completely frozen.  Remove cookies to a plastic freezer bag or container and return to freezer.

When ready to bake, preheat oven to 375 degrees F.  Grease a baking sheet with vegetable shortening, or alternately line with parchment paper. Place frozen cookies on the sheet about 3 inches apart.

Bake for about 15 minutes or until lightly browned.  Let set for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.  Serve warm or at room temperature.  Baked cookies will stay fresh for about 4 days in an airtight container.

Cannabis Overdose? 6 Things to Do if You or Someone You Know Eats Too Much Marijuana

Can you overdose on edibles?  Is there such a thing as a “cannabis overdose?”  If so how much THC does it take to overdose?

The answer will depend on what exactly you mean by the word “marijuana overdose.”

No, you are never going “overdose” in the sense of shutting down your organs.  You won’t cease breathing either.  Cannabis simply does not work that way in the body.  Nor is it ever the cause of death.  Again, it just does not function that way physiologically.

That said, you can “overdose” on cannabis in the sense that you can get more THC than your body needs.

So when we are talking about a “marijuana overdose,” what we are really talking about is someone ingesting too much THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid in marijuana responsible for many of its medicinal effects, but also responsible for making you feel high.

If this happens you might experience some less-than-desirable side effects such as nausea, disorientation, imbalance, and sometimes even vomiting.  These may or may not be accompanied by a hefty dose of paranoia.

But beyond this discomfort, too much cannabis is not inherently dangerous.

Too Many Edibles

There is no easier way to ingest too much cannabis than by eating it.  Unlike inhalable cannabis that you feel effects from nearly instantly, it can be 1 1/2 hours or more to feel the effects of edible cannabis.

A common mistake people make is thinking it’s not working, eating more, then by the time it all hits they find out the hard way that they ate too much.

Another reason edibles can be so tricky is because everyone’s dosing needs are highly individual.  An amount that puts one person under the table might be just barely enough for someone else.

If you want to have good experiences with edibles, it’s important to determine how much you need in order feel good and consume accordingly.  And the amount that’s right for you may be significantly different than the amount you friend, or spouse, or family member needs.

6 Things To Do If You Eat Too Much Cannabis

What if you or someone you know accidentally gets into that uncomfortable “too high” state?

First and foremost, calm down and relax. Or if it is happening to someone you know, help them to calm down.

As we said, it might be uncomfortable, but it isn’t dangerous.  And there are definitely things you can do to make it stop more quickly.

  1. CBD – Many people don’t know about this little miracle trick, but CBD counters the effects of too much THC!  If you start to feel too high, put a few drops of CBD tincture under your tongue.  Alternately a CBD breath spray can also work.  In either case, you’ll start to experience relief from an uncomfortable high within a minute or two of absorbing the CBD.  I always keep some on hand at parties, just in case!
  2. Black peppercorns – Black peppercorns seem to also work to counteract an excess of THC.  While we are not sure of the mechanics of how this works in the body, it seems to have to do with the fact that the two plants share some terpene profiles.  But the bottom line is, chewing on a few black peppercorns can help shorten the duration of an uncomfortable THC high.
  3. Drink lots of water – Dehydration and cotton mouth, typical cannabis side effects, are even more pronounced with edibles.  Be sure to drink plenty of water.
  4. Don’t drink alcohol – Alcohol can intensify the effects of too much THC, plus can add to disorientation, nausea, and dehydration.  Avoid alcohol when taking edibles.
  5. Eat something non-medicated – Unless you are feeling sick to your stomach, eating non-medicated foods can help you feel back to normal quicker.  Also, keep in mind that eating cannabis edibles on an empty stomach can make you feel them more intensely.
  6. Sleep it off – If you are still feeling out of sorts after these steps, the best thing to do is simply lie down and sleep it off.  All should be well when you awaken.

Avoid Overdoing It From The Start

The best way to avoid consuming too much is to go slow and know your dose. Making accurate edibles with Ardent’s precision decarboxylators ensures that you’re getting the most out of your material and maintain the ability to control your dose.

Whether you’re activating THC, CBD, CBG or over any of the 80+ cannabinoids present in this amazing plant, Ardent’s lab-grade activation lets you create custom blends and doses at the press of a button!

The Concentrate and Infusion Sleeve is a silicone insert that lines the inside of your Ardent FX, Mini or Nova device for mess-free experimenting right inside your unit. Made of FDA approved, food-grade, BPA-free material, the Sleeve is your answer to precisely activating sticky, waxy, hard to manipulate concentrates, as well as making easy two-step cannabis and hemp infusions right inside the machine.

The Sleeve is also a huge help when making messy candy edibles inside the unit. The slippery inside ensures you never lose a drop of your infused treats. Try out our infused Starburst, Nerds Rope, or infused gummy hack recipe to get started!

With Sleeves fit for the Nova or FX and Mini, regardless of which device you own, you can ensure a simple, mess-free process each and every time.

Grab a Single or Double Lifter for the Ardent Nova, or a Single, Double, or Triple Lifter for the Ardent FX.

Infusion Press

The Infusion Press is an attachable FX strainer that separates out your spent material from your infusions without the mess. The Press also features an easy pour spout, so once your infusion cycle is complete, all you have to do is replace the FX’s standard lid with the Press and push the lever down. Then, easily pour your infusion out into the airtight container of your choosing (we’re partial to the Vessel.)

The Infusion Press works by plunging your infusion through 4 layers of metal and mesh strainers at the gentle press of a lever. It’s great for folks suffering with mobility in their hands, where using a cheesecloth or coffee filter might be too tiresome and ineffective at grabbing every last drop.
The Infusion Press can also be used to brew coffee and tea inside your unit, along with so many other practical, non-medicated recipes.

Frainer

The Ardent Frainer is the perfect solution for those making small batch infusions, or storing infusions in bottles or containers with smaller mouths. A funnel and removable strainer in one handy accessory, the Ardent Frainer is a practical kitchen tool for cannabis, hemp, and beyond.

Infusion Mold

The Ardent Infusion Mold is a silicone storage container for infusions of all kinds. With 4 separate cavities containing 8 premeasured tablespoon divots in each section, it’s easy to pour out infusions like cannabutter from the device and into separate pre-dosed stick sections. With 4 sections to play with, you can use different herbs, strains, potencies, and infusion mediums within each section. Since it’s made of silicone, you can also bake inside of it, if need be! The Infusion Mold’s branded cover helps prevent spills and invasive fridge smells from creeping their way inside.

Scent Shield

The new Ardent FX Scent Shield provides an extra layer of security for your discretion and a solution for sensitive noses. Remove the FX lid, then replace it with the Ardent FX Scent Shield during decarboxylation, infusion, and bake cycles whenever you want to avoid drawing attention to your medicine.

Nosy neighbors, judgy roommates, prying landlords, and even children in your household won’t sense a thing as your cannabis or hemp decarboxylates, infuses, and bakes in the FX.

The provided filters nestle inside the lid, which can be disposed of and replaced. Each filter uses activated carbon as a smell neutralizer and deodorizer, binding the odor molecules and attaching them to the surface. A perfect option for folks with a heightened sense of smell compared to the average person.

These DIY edibles mixes already have the cannabis in there.  So make sure your recipients are aware that there are active cannabinoids in these tasty treats!

Below are three favorite cannabis DIY mix recipes using cannaflour, two for cookies and one for brownies.  However, there’s no need to limit yourself.  The internet is filled with all kinds of giftable Mason Jar mix recipes that use flour as a component.  Swap out the flour for cannaflour, and you have a Cannabis Infused Mason Jar mix!

Besides gifts, for convenience sake you might also want to make a few extra mixes for yourself.  Having everything pre-measured and ready to go makes it super quick and easy to whip up a batch of delicious hot-from-the-oven edibles anytime.

What you will need to make your own mixes:

  • Jars – Most often you will use 1 quart canning jars, however, some recipes, such as the brownie mix below, can be packed in smaller 1-pint jars.
  • Canning funnel – a wide mouth canning funnel makes it easy to neatly layer ingredients.  However, you can use a spoon to carefully place ingredients in the jars if you don’t have this tool.
  • Measuring cups
  • Cannaflour – Find instructions for making it at this link.
  • Recipe ingredients

How to make cannabis infused DIY mixes

Making this project could not be simpler.  Once you decide on a recipe, here’s what you need to do.

  • Use the Ardent FX, Mini or Nova to decarboxylate your cannabis
  • Prepare the cannaflour
  • Gather your jars and the remaining ingredients you need to make the recipe.
  • Layer ingredients into the jars.  You could alternately just mix it all together and put it in a jar, but layering different colors and textures will make your DIY mixes more decorative.
  • Add a lid to the jar.  Decorate if desired.
  • Add a label and instructions for baking.

It’s that easy to gift your friends with edibles!

Play with the Recipes!

Make DIY mix recipes your own with substitutions and add-ins.  Here are just a few suggestions:

  • Experiment with chips!  Chocolate chips come in milk, dark, and semi-sweet.  You can also get white chocolate chips and peanut butter chips.  If you are lucky (or you want to order online) you can even find cinnamon chips, and butterscotch chips.  They all have the same consistency, but add different flavor profiles to mix recipes.
  • Instead of chocolate chips, you could use a chef’s knife to create small chocolate chunks for your mixes.
  • Chopped nuts of all kinds make another great addition.
  • Add texture and sweetness with dried fruits like raisins cherries, cranberries, blueberries, etc.
  • Candied citrus rinds make an interesting and flavorful addition.
  • Stirring in shredded sweetened coconut adds moisture, flavor, and texture to the finished baked goods.

Decorating Jar Lids

If you are in a hurry and need to gift your mix fast, here are 4 quick and easy ways to make the jar lids look good:

  • Slap a bow onto the lid and your gift is good to go.
  • If you use regular 2-piece Mason jar lids consisting of a flat lid and ring, put a sheet of decorative gift wrap between the two, or a couple of sheets of colored tissue paper, like we did in the photos.
  • You can also sandwich some decorative fabric between the jar lid and ring.  Use pinking shears to cut fabric circles for decorative edges.
  • Plastic reusable canning jar lids are available in a rainbow of colors.  These look great, as is, with or without a bow on top.

If you are NOT in a hurry and you are crafty, there are LOTS of other ways to decorate jar lids.  In fact, there are entire books on it.

Printable DIY Mix Instructions

You will DEFINITELY want to label your cannabis-infused mixes well and also include instructions on how to use them.

For your convenience, we have prepared some printable instruction tags or labels you can download here.  These are formatted 4 to a page and each measure 4” X 5”.  Print on paper, cut out, and attach to the jar with a hole punch and ribbon, or use spray adhesive to stick to the jar.

Beyond baking instructions, however, be sure to CLEARLY label that the jar contains cannabis, so there are never any mistakes made.  Again, for your convenience, we have some graphics you can print and attach to your gift.

It is also a good idea to include a note on dosing information, so the giftee knows what to expect.  Since the dosage in your mix will depend on the strength of the cannabis you use to make your cannaflour, you will need to fill this part in yourself.  Learn more about dosing here.

4 Ways to Infuse

The first step to any successful infusion is a precise decarb. Decarbing in the oven, toaster oven, crockpot, or other home heating methods, will yield much less active cannabinoids due to fluctuations in temperature and time. You’ll either fail to fully activate everything there, or burn off precious cannabinoids in the process.

Ardent solves the issue of unnecessary plant material waste, saving you money because you use less, and the process couldn’t be easier with Ardent Fx, Mini or Nova precision decarboxylators. Get a precise decarb (97-100% activation) each and every time. Plus, no need to keep an eye on your bud in fear of burning your material.

That means you can put your flower, kief, concentrates in the device, and go take a walk, nap, or get the rest of your housework done knowing that the most important part of your cannaDIY process is completed to perfection. Once you’ve properly activated your herb, take your pick of infusing in one of four different ways outlined below:

Directly In-Unit

Let’s not forget, the Ardent decarboxylators are fully functional devices on their own; however, our suite of accessories were expertly crafted to make your Ardent experience even more simple and mess-free.

To infuse right inside the Ardent FX or Minis just add the oil or butter of your choosing over your precisely activated plant material inside the FX’s core. Cover the FX with the standard lid or the Ardent FX Scent Shield, and press the “M” or “mode” button until it’s reached the Infuse setting. Start the cycle and let it infuse until the cycle is complete or until you’ve finished your desired infusion length. Strain out the spent material from the infusion using the Frainer, Infusion Press for FX, or a standard cheesecloth.

To infuse inside the Ardent Nova, just add the oil or butter of your choosing over your precisely activated plant material inside the removable inner canister. Then, place the Nova’s lid back on top and press the single button interface until the cycle is complete or until you’ve finished your desired infusion length. Strain out the spent plant material from the infusion using the Ardent Frainer or a cheesecloth. Clean the Nova’s inner canister with soap and water by hand.

Concentrate and Infusion Sleeves

With the Concentrate and Infusion Sleeve, fit for either the Ardent FX or Nova, cleanup is a breeze. Not only can you create a seamless liner for your device that leaves your unit spotless after each cycle, it’s also a handy tool for melting down chocolate, candy, and more.

Toss your material into the Concentrate and Infusion Sleeve, then place inside the unit and begin a decarb cycle. Once the cycle is complete, remove the Sleeve from the Nova by carefully squeezing the sides until you have a grip, and lifting it out of the device. In the FX, hold the Sleeve by the finger holes on each side, and lift it out of the device.

Pour your butter or oil over the activated material, fully submerging it, and place the Sleeve back inside the Nova and FX to infuse. Once complete, strain the plant material out of the infusion using the Ardent Frainer, Infusion Press, or a standard cheesecloth, and store in an airtight container such as the Infusion Mold or Vessel. Wash the Concentrate and Infusion Sleeve by hand with soap and water.

Vessel

The Ardent Vessel is an Infusion Sleeve and stash jar in one handy unit! To infuse using the Vessel, start by decarbing your material.

Place your flower, concentrate, kief, etc. inside the unlidded Vessel and put it inside your FX or Nova device. Decarb your material using the single button interface in the Nova, or using the A1 setting on the FX for CBG or THC, and A2 for CBD.

Once the cycle is complete, remove the Vessel from the unit using the silicone handle. Pour your oil or butter over the activated material, fully submerging it, and place it back inside the unit. Cover the unit with the standard lid or Scent Shield and begin another Nova cycle or FX infusion cycle.

Strain using the Ardent Frainer, Infusion Press, or a standard cheesecloth, and pour back inside the Vessel, lidded, to store.

Glass Jar/Lifters

Dispensary waste is a huge problem! Legal cannabis consumers are often left with good glass jars and pretty much nothing to do with them: until now. Repurpose your 8th jars, jam jars, pasta sauce jars, mason jars, and beyond in-unit to make plenty of infusions!

To make an infusion using a glass jar inside your decarboxylator, start with decarb. Place your flower, concentrate, kief, or stems inside the glass jar. You can place the glass jar directly inside the FX, Nova, or Mini. For easier removal, added stability or to make multiple infusions at once (especially for small jars in the FX and Nova) place the glass jar on the Lifter of your choosing. For reference, the FX Single Lifter fits a standard sized mason jar, and the FX Double Lifter fits a standard 8th jar. The FX Triple Lifter allows you to make three infusions at once!

Slide the Lifter loaded with the cannabis-filled jars inside the Nova or FX and press the single button on Nova to decarb, or for FX press the A1 setting for THC or CBG activation, and A2 for CBD activation. Once the cycle is complete, remove the Lifter from the device, and pour your butter or oil over top, fully submerging the material. Then, place the Lifter back inside for infusion cycles (Nova 2nd press of the button, FX and Mini on Infuse Setting, or starting an Infuse cycle in the FX. Once the cycle is complete, strain, store, and enjoy.
