Luckily, there are lots of cannabutter alternatives that make making your own edibles easier. We put together a list to give you some inspiration.
If you want to keep using butter in your edibles, kief butter or kief oil is a great alternative to traditional cannabutter. Kief is the sticky bits of resin you see on buds. Making kief butter is quicker and simpler than its cannabis-infused counterpart and when cooked, it doesn’t impart the flavor of cannabis like using the whole flower.
You don’t have to worry about simmering it for more than a few minutes, there’s no plant matter to strain out, and your home won’t smell like weed for days. The major difference in the finished product is the fact that kief has a very high concentration of cannabinoids so you’ll want to use less than regular cannabutter.
Recently, cannabis coconut oil has become a popular cannabutter substitute. It has a high amount of saturated fat, allowing it to absorb more cannabinoids than butter and other types of oil. It’s also more versatile than butter and is perfect for people on vegan, paleo, or keto diets.
For the easiest time making cannabis coconut oil, decarb your cannabis in your decarboxylator and proceed with a quick 15 minute double boiler infusion. You can also skip the straining step by putting your bud in a cheesecloth or cotton satchel during cooking.
In addition to coconut oil, other types of oil make great alternatives for cannabutter. Canola oil is probably the best choice if you’re baking, due to the mild taste and the fact that it can be easily switched out for butter in most baked goods.
Olive oil is another popular choice, but it is best suited for cooking savory dishes. Once you’ve finished decarbing, grab a mason jar and crock pot and give this easy, no mess way to make cannaoil a try! (Once decarbed in your decarboxylator, you can decrease the infusion time to 15-30 minutes.)
Ghee, or clarified butter, is butter that has been heated so that the water is removed and only the milk solids remain. A staple in Indian cooking, it’s increasingly popular with people that have trouble digesting dairy since the cooking process removes the casein and lactose. Although it starts with butter, making cannaghee isn’t as labor intensive or as messy as making cannabutter. The end result can be used in any recipe that calls for butter.
Tinctures are a great, no-mess way to infuse weed into your edibles. Many people like using tinctures in recipes over cannabutter or cannaoil because it’s very easy to control the dose and the high from a sub-lingual tincture isn’t as long-lasting as one from infused oil.
